The Real People play The Castle & Falcon in Birmingham

Formed in 1988 by Chris and Tony Griffiths, The Real People have played a pivotal role in the British music scene. Renowned as being the original purveyors of Britpop, they literally kicked open the doors for Oasis. The Realies not only recorded the demos that got Oasis signed, but co-produced their first two singles and through “Columbia” gave them their sound (see The Real People versus Oasis and form your own judgement on the extent of their influence https://youtu.be/kwuAgaqM5g8 and https://youtu.be/NwBpm6OTWGo ).

Whilst some bands would have bleated about this, The Realies got on with producing a huge body of work that really stands the test of time. Albums include The Real People, What’s On The Outside, Think Positive, Marshmallow Lane and this years Monday Morning Breakdown. These sit alongside some excellent singles in the form of Window Pane, Open Up Your Mind, The Truth,  Believer, Rayners Lane, The People In The Telly and Rolling Stone amongst others (many of which continue to feature in their legendary live shows). The brothers Griffiths, Tony and Chris, are prolific songwriters and fans have long been demanding better access to the music recorded by the band, but never officially released, over the past 25 years. This years release, Monday Morning Breakdown, is a cracker and should go some way to addressing this.

Recently the Oasis link has resurfaced with Liam Gallagher heaping praise on The Realies in a series of tweets and both Noel and Liam continuing to play The Real People written “Rockin Chair”. Despite this, the band continue to keep a reasonably low profile, given their illustrious past, preferring to play smaller gigs in quirky venues.

Catch The Realies playing on Saturday 16th December! Having sold out Brum weeks in advance on their March Visit. If you have never seen The Real People before, they should be on your indie-bucket list. They are Oasis before Oasis, the La’s with flamethrowers, one of Englands finest ever bands and a force of nature live on stage. A gig as rare as rocking horse sh*t and one you should not miss.

Lush Birmingham host a night of live music for charity…

Lush Birmingham take over the venue on the 24th November for their Singing For Supper event, a night of live music in aid of The Night Shelter at Coventry Peace House.

Whose on the line-up?

Kicking off the night is The Chalet Lines, a solo act from Joe Parker (formerly of Enquire), if you like Pinegrove and Death Cab for Cutie this guys lo-fo memo pop melodies are just for you.

Joining them are Alfresco Love Sounds, after clocking up airtime on Tom Clabons show on Brum Radio and support from BBC WM Introducing these guys will be there to inject some sunshine into the evening with their upbeat psych-pop jams. Their new track ‘Lemonade’ is worth a listen.

Next up, plucked from a support slot for Yassassin and the Hungry Ghosts, new kids on the block, Sofa King take to the stage.  Already making a name for themselves these guys mix jangly guitars and growly synths into something magical. Fronted by enigmatic Dianne Burdon these guys will be sure to give a performance to remember.

Headlining the bill are Tamworth alt-rock two-piece, You Dirty Blue. Fresh from supporting Wolf Alice on their UK tour at The Venue in Derby, this is a chance to hear them in an intimate setting, this band won’t be in small venues for much longer!

What is The Night Shelter?

The Night shelter is one of Coventry Peace Houses most used projects. Open from 8:30pm to 8:30 in the morning it provides a safe haven for those who need it.  The shelter has 21 people staying with them every night with people from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. The shelter is run solely on donations and manages to do a lot with the small budget they have available. Coventry Peace House also act as a hub for a non-profit bike workshop, a community space, and the Peace House Education Trust, which tackles inequality by providing art workshops to hard to reach groups.

Where can I get tickets, should I bring anything to donate?

Tickets cost £5.50 ADV and are available here. Lush Birmingham are asking guests to bring donations of the following items for Coventry Peace House:

Sugar, breakfast cereal, rice, jam, toothbrushes, toothpaste, cooking oil, instant coffee, toilet roll, or washing powder.
