Uncover Presents:
Goya Gumbani & Yaya Bey
Goya Gumbani moved with his family from New York to London when he was a teenager, but he still sounds like an MC straight out of Brooklyn. His lax rap flows will win over any East Coast boom-bap fan, oozing a serene calm rather than adhering to toxic macho stereotypes. A decade of collaborations in his new UK home inspired a back-to-back stream of EPs in 2020 with South London beatmakers Rago Foot and Kiina. The result is an elegant crossover into SE1’s modern jazz community that takes musical inspiration from both sides of the pond.
Enigmatic, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter, Yaya Bey, is a multi-hyphenate artist who “effortlessly mingles the personal and political with enthralling freshness,” as described by Pitchfork. Bey’s most recent EP, The Things I Can’t Take With Me (2021) was met with critical praise from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Noisey, FADER, Harper’s Bazaar and more. As a multidisciplinary artist, Yaya has completed multiple fine art residencies with the MoCADA Museum in Brooklyn, NY where she curated programs focused on the Black woman experience, a theme that is intrinsic to her musical output.
